- Get back to life.
Urinary incontinence is a condition where urine is leaked before a patient is ready to use the restroom. Often women think this condition has no treatment options. In recent years the incontinence treatment options have expanded and women now have a variety of choices both surgical and medical.
What types of urinary incontinence is there?
There are two common types of leakage of urine: Urge or stress incontinence
Urge incontinence symptoms include: leakage of urine on the way to the restroom, a severe sense of urge with or without leakage of urine
Stress incontinence: this is a type of leakage of urine that occurs with cough, laugh, sneeze or exercise.
What is overactive bladder?
Overactive bladder is a combination of symptoms: urinary urgency and frequency. It is not a disease. It is usually treated with medications, and there are procedural options as well.
What medications can treat incontinence?
Urge Incontinence (the “I have to get to the rest room RIGHT NOW” feeling) can be treated with several varieties of medications. The most common types are called anticholinergics or beta-3 agonists. Those medications may also be used in combination if necessary. The medications may take a few weeks to work, but when taken daily are highly effective.
What if my medication isn’t working well?
Your urologist may combine medications, switch medications, or offer several procedures for incontinence. Bladder botox and sacral neuromodulation are two common procedures that work well for urinary urgency incontinence.
Why would I need surgery for incontinence?
Some incontinence, especially stress incontinence (the leak when you laugh or exercise variety) may be best treated with a surgical procedure. Cure rates reach >90% for some patients with very small incisions (single incision sling). Some patients with urge incontinence may not respond well to medical therapy, and procedural options are available.
