Robotic Partial Nephrectomy

Robotic partial nephrectomy

Reinventing surgery for kidney cancer.

More and more patients are able to preserve part of the kidney.

Less removal of kidney means more retained kidney function.

By combining 3-D-HD technology, tumors can now be scooped out of the kidney with minimal effect on the residual kidney tissue.

Small incisions allow for a faster recovery.

Most patients go home the day after surgery.

Who gets a partial nephrectomy?

Patients with kidney masses suspicious for cancer are the most common reason for a partial nephrectomy. Other lesions or masses on the kidney can also be removed robotically.

What can I expect the day of surgery?

This procedure is performed under anesthesia, and generally takes about 3 hours. Part of the kidney is removed with the assistance of the robotic platform, ensuring the smallest and most cosmetic incisions available. After surgery, most patients will stay the night in the hospital with pain control and labs.

What can I expect after surgery?

Smaller incisions mean less pain, and earlier return home. Most patients walk the same day as surgery and are able to eat and drink a few hours after the procedure. Most patients go home the day after surgery. Long acting pain medication is injected during the procedure and patients usually require very minimal narcotic pain medication.

What happens when I get home?

Patients return to daily activity as soon as they return home. Generally after surgery heavy lifting >10 lbs, running or squatting weights is discouraged for 3 weeks after surgery. This allows the body to heal and reduces the risk of hernia. You will be able to shower the day after surgery but no bath for two weeks. Pools or lakes discouraged for 3 weeks after surgery.
